I've noticed that underneath most of our daily concerns, there is a fundamental longing to ease the pain in the world, a universal wish to ease the suffering of others. From the starving and dying in far corners of the world, to the homeless in our own streets, to the kids in our own communities who don't have the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe, and educated – these all hurt our hearts, and inspire the unmistakable urge in us to do something.
A teacher of mine once described this longing we all feel as "aspiration – a desire to achieve something grand and noble, something larger than ourselves and our own goals." The Buddhists call people who commit themselves to the aspiration to heal the world Bodhisattvas. When I heard this, I knew I wanted to be a Bodhisattva. And as I talked about it with my friends, I found that most of them did, too.
But sometimes it seems too overwhelming. I feel like it's impossible to help, and I end up at a loss to imagine that any action I could take could possibly make a difference. But I wonder...
What's to stop us? As members of humankind, we have available to us endless resources: boundless creativity, ever-increasing wisdom, bottomless energy, and infinite love. Now, for the first time in history, we find ourselves at a global convergence of aspiration and possibility: Today's communication technology lets us engage with vast numbers of people all over the world – each one with this longing to help in his or her own way. We have the undeniable opportunity to set a global intention to end suffering, to wipe out poverty, disease, intolerance, and violence.
In fact, if you’re here, you've already started to think about the possibilities. And now you're part of a community of people who want to make it possible.
That's where HumanKind Media comes in. There are amazing things being done and to be done by amazing people you've never heard of. And you may have something possible up your sleeve that you never imagined. We're going to tell those stories, and provide a place for you to figure out your own story.
So here is our invitation. If you're up for news about the impossible becoming possible, getting a little inspiration, and developing great ideas for contributing your unique self to the world, join us here at HumanKind Media, the little blog about healing the world. We’ll connect with each other about all the wonderful things that are happening to fulfill our longing to help each other. We'll build a global intention to heal the world.
