Back in December, when we were writing on the theme of peace and connection, we came up with an idea to connect to each other through HumanKind Challenge #3, our "virtual peace demonstration." Our Frappr map turned out to be fun, and funky, but funny, too. Many people who visited the site but didn't sign up ended up as map dots in Kansas -- Wichita, to be exact -- via the mysteries of ISPs and central switches. Wichita had more dots than the anywhere else in the world. We wrote a post about the phenomenon, "Who Knew..", and then the fun really began. Turns out the real "peace hub" of the U.S. is the International Peace Museum in Dayton, Ohio. They posted one of the coolest pictures we have on our map (look for the person in the dove suit -- it really is a dove, not a chicken!) Here's what we wrote about that.
In February, we wanted to keep growing the map, so we when we wrote about love and Socrates, we renamed it the Peace and Love map. Now, we're beyond February, but we're still attached to the map. We'd like to keep it going forever. Just like donating bed nets and helping women around the world, we'd like it to be a permanent fixture in HumanKind. So, if you haven't yet, take a moment now and put yourself on the HumanKind Map. We'd love to see where you're reading us from and any picture you wish to share (we've got dogs, horses, kids, objects, and, of course, the peace dove).
The instructions are below the map. Thanks for participating!
Here's how to add yourself:
1. Click on the gray "stats, pics, members" bar at the bottom of the map, which will take you to a larger view of it.
2. Click on the blue link that says "Hi! Please add yourself" in the bubble that appears over the pin.
3. Type in your first name or alias, and if you can, add a picture. Members stay on the map. Visitors may end up in Kansas :( even if that's not where they are. You'll receive one e-mail from Frappr to see if you want your own map, but that's it--no junk mail.
4. Once you add yourself, if the pin isn't in the right place, you can move it by clicking on "move this pin" and typing in your city, state, and country.
5. After you're added, you can zoom in and out, look for new and old friends, and of course, we'd love it if you'd copy this link and e-mail this to your friends.
There will be no cookies, literally or figuratively, or junk mail from us; you're not consenting to anything, petitioning anything, or committing to anything. You're not getting anything free -- no coupons, airline miles, or grains of rice donated to ease world hunger (wish we'd thought of that!). Just a blog and its readers creating a world-wide web of connection in the spirit of possibility. Click and see. Then stay tuned over the next days, weeks, months -- whatever it takes to cover that map!
Peace and love,
Chris and Liz
