While clicking around adding to my "topics" list (so many cool things to write about--we can hardly wait) I found the social entrpreneurial answer to the World Economic Forum--the World Social Forum. And, I found them just in time, because tomorrow, January 26 is Global Day of Action.
You can read the Wikipedia synopsis to see the controversial history(what large changes don't have a controversial history?) and the opinions pro and con, but since we're all about possibilities, we like to look at the potential here. A look at their map of events shows events from Sarajevo to Hong Kong, and from Vermont to Sydney.
There are events and activities covering everything from democratic media reform in Santa Cruz to economic reform in Bangladesh and non-violent peace rallies in Spain. And, speaking about making a world fit for children, I found Katha, an organization working with thousands of families in Delhi to make a "world fit for kids" which we'll be writing about soon. Our friends at ArtAidsArt whom we wrote about in A Surprise Next Door have a giving campaign for Global Action Day to support the building of their eKhaya eKasi Community Center.
Happily, I also found the Really Really Free Market, sponsored by ReallyReallyFree.Org which, suprise to me, is held every month not too far from me. Their website says there may be one near you also, or you can start your own (they've posted 4 easy steps). A leap along the path of the Smile Cards into the ever-growing giving economy, ReallyReallyFree is one of those ideas whose time is ripening. On their home page in the "about" section they say: "Because there is enough for everyone and because sharing is more fulfilling than owning." We like that.
Remember, Enstein said we can't solve problems with the same thinking we created them? If you liked the RRFM idea, we've got more where that came from soon when we talk about sustainability.
In the meantime, to find what's going on in your neck of the global community, click here (and let the map load), choose your language, click on "Find An Action" and off you go. If you've got plans for January 26, that's ok. The list will give you plenty of ideas for people to connect with, websites to visit, and things to do to create your own global action day, and hopefully, offer you a hefty dose of hope and inspiration for new possibilities for a better world.
