I'm a freelance journalist living in New York City, and yeah, true to the stereotype, every day I spend in this city gives me a new reason to throw my hands up and say, "This world is mean and crazy!"
But every day there are also reasons to stop for a second and appreciate the small, meaningful connections that people make with each other. I've seen strangers come through for each other, I've been the recipient of unabashed kindnesses, and I've helped others along in the world just when they needed it.
And what I've found is this. The more instances of healing and connection that I notice, the more at peace I feel, and the more healing and connection I create in my own life. When I tell a story about it, or hear a story about it, that strengthens in me the idea that everything is possible. And I see this happening for other people, too.
That's why I'm working on this site with Chris, who has been my incredible friend and writing partner for more than five years. I know there are millions of people working every day in their own ways to heal the world, whether it's the part of the world that's right in front of them, or the places and people they hear about only through media.
Sharing these stories can help all of us get past the frustration and helplessness we feel in the face of someone else's disaster, or deep poverty, or tragedy. Hearing stories about healing helps us hang on to our strong desire to reach beyond ourselves and help, and not capsize under the idea that it's impossible.
It helps us move from longing to help to taking action to help -- our own unique action, a contribution no one else can make.
In the stories we tell each other, and in the stories we share through global media, we find proof over and over that the impossible is possible. And if we keep moving forward with this proof, with this belief, we will find that at some point, we've done it. We've healed the world.
